Privacy Policy

Overview

AZMap, operated by Sonoran Strategy Solutions, LLC ("we", "us", "our"), is a live map of extreme weather and related conditions in Arizona at azmap.live. This policy explains what data we collect and how we use it.

AZMap has no accounts, no sign-ups, and no forms. We never ask for your name, email address, or device location, and the map never requests browser geolocation. We collect minimal usage data to understand how the site is used, and we do not sell personal information or use it for advertising.

What We Collect

  • Usage analytics. We use PostHog, a product analytics service, to record pages viewed, map layers and filters toggled, map items opened, browser and device type, and an approximate city-level location derived from your IP address. A random identifier stored in your browser ties visits together. It is not linked to your name or any account, because neither exists on this site.
  • Session recordings. We use PostHog session recording, which captures how visitors interact with the site: mouse movement, scrolling, clicks, and pages viewed. Recordings are tied to the same random identifier. Recordings mask typed text by default, and the site has no text inputs.
  • Map preferences. Your layer selections, tier filters, and dismissed panels are stored in your browser's local storage so the map remembers your setup. This data stays on your device and does not identify you.

We do not store the content of your visits in our own databases. Our databases hold weather, fire, hydrology, and curated news data. No IP addresses, identifiers, or browsing histories are recorded by our code.

How We Use Your Data

We use analytics data to understand which layers and pages get used, to find problems, and to decide what to build next. We use operational logs to debug the service. That is the full list. We do not sell personal information, share it for advertising, or use it for ad targeting.

Third-Party Services

  • Cloudflare hosts the site and processes requests (IP address, browser details, requested URL) to serve and secure it, keeping short-lived operational logs we can read for debugging. See the Cloudflare privacy policy.
  • PostHog provides the analytics and session recording described above, hosted on PostHog's United States cloud. Analytics requests travel through our own servers before reaching PostHog. See the PostHog privacy policy.
  • Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics (GA4) currently also measure site usage and set Google cookies. See the Google privacy policy.
  • Mapbox serves the basemap and satellite imagery. The map library also sends usage data (telemetry) to Mapbox with a random identifier it stores in your browser. Mapbox's telemetry page describes the practice and how to opt out with Mapbox directly.
  • Content hosts. Rendering the map and incident pages means your browser requests files directly from other services: radar tiles from NOAA, satellite cloud imagery from NASA, photos from InciWeb (a federal interagency incident system), preview images and icons from the news outlets whose coverage is linked, and video preview images from the video platform's content network. Each host sees your IP address and browser type when it serves a file, as with any content on the web. We send news and photo requests without referrer information (the address of the page the request came from), so those hosts do not learn what you were viewing.
  • Video platforms. Video players are click-to-play. A static preview image may load with the page, but no player, script, or cookie from YouTube or Facebook loads until you press play. YouTube playback uses YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode. Once a video plays, that platform's own privacy policy applies.

Links to external sites, including agency pages and news coverage, are governed by those sites' own privacy policies.

Cookies

We set no cookies of our own, and PostHog is configured to use browser local storage instead of cookies. Google Analytics sets cookies (names beginning with _ga). You can control cookies and local storage through your browser settings. The site works normally with ad blockers and privacy tools, and clearing site data for azmap.live resets it to defaults.

Data Retention

We keep no visitor records of our own, so there is typically nothing for us to delete. Analytics and usage data are retained by PostHog, Google, and Mapbox under their retention settings, and Cloudflare's operational logs age out on their own. AZMap is operated from the United States and data is processed in the United States.

Your Rights

Since we collect minimal personal data and do not require accounts, there is typically no personal data to manage. Because analytics identifiers are random and not linked to names or emails, we usually cannot match analytics data to a person who asks for it. For questions about your data, or to request deletion of whatever can be identified, contact us at the address below. We do not sell personal information as that term is defined in U.S. state privacy laws, and we run no advertising, so there is nothing for Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals to switch off.

Children's Privacy

AZMap is a general-audience site. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

If these practices change, this page will be updated with a new date, and material changes will be called out at the top.
